  • 1 - S. Maria del Fiore (Duomo)
  • 1296-15th cent. The Duomo. Renamed S. Maria del Fiore 13th cent., earlier called S. Reparata. Giotto campanile from 1334. New choir begun by Bandinelli from 1547 for Cosimo I (since replaced), new façade begun 1587 (since replaced). The Duomo was also a parish. B51 Paatz III:320 Pza Duomo.

  • 2 - S. Giovanni Battista (Battistero)
  • Before 1000. The Baptistry for the whole city. The Baptismal Font was rebuilt by Buontalenti 1577 for baptism of Francesco I's son Filippo (who died in infancy). B69 Paatz II:172 Pza S Giovanni Battista.

  • 3 - S. Zanobi column
  • 14th cent. column laced with iron elm branches in leaf surmounted by a cross. According to legend when the body of S. Zanobi (5th cent. bishop/saint) was carried into S. Reparata (first name of the Duomo) for burial an elm tree put out its leaves in winter. Buonsignori put the marker 196 next to the Duomo. B196 Pza S. Giovanni.

  • 14th. Cent? Canons of the Duomo, with their church of S. Pier Coelorum. B43 Limb 235 Paatz IV:618 Pza Duomo

  • 5 - S. Benedetto Par.
  • Anc. Par. Ch. Secularized 1769. B17 Paatz I:345 V. dello Studio 10.

  • 6 - S. Cristofano Par.

  • 7 - S. Margherita dei Ricci
  • 1508 church, porch by G. Silvani 1611, interior 18th cent. Paatz III:91 V. del Corso 6.

  • 8 - S. Michele delle Trombe - S. Elisabetta Par.
  • Anc. Par. Ch. Renamed S. Elisabetta under Pope Leo X in 1517. Secularized 1785. B107 Paatz II:18. Pza. S. Elisabetta No longer exists.

  • 9 - Oratory of the Bigallo
  • 14th cent. oratory associated with the Confraternity of the Misericordia and with the Capitani di Bigallo from the Republic who supervised hospitals and the mendicant poor. B14 Paatz I:378 Pza. Duomo.

"Quarter: S. Giovanni, Parishes: S. Benedetto, S. Cristofano, S. Leo, Duomo, S. Michele delle Trombe, S. Maria in Campo, S. Maria Nipotecosa, S. Tommaso, Streets: Corso Adimari, Piazza del Duomo, Piazza S. Giovanni, Pza Succhiellinai (V Roma), V Calzaiuoli {p}. (The street names are only partly listed.) Square 36 had a moderate number of households, many shops, some patricians, many households with servants, many households w/o surnames, and some households headed by widows. This square was much changed by urban redevelopment in the 1880s. In 1561 the painter Bronzino lived in this square (Corso Adimari)."
