Newsletter Excerpts, CDGM, 1965
The following excerpts from 1965 Child Development Group of Mississippi newsletters appeared in a manual “Volume II: Teacher Development and Program for Children.” These selections illustrate the information available to those who worked at CDGM and the attitude within the organization in its early years. The newsletters emphasize sharing of ideas and engaging questions to motivate and inspire cooperative program development. Area Teacher Guides, CDGM employees who worked between local centers and the central office, wrote these newsletters, so the issues which appear here combine administrative concerns with local activities. During this period in CDGM’s existence, the the federal funder, the Office of Economic Opportunity began to set limits on CDGM’s power and to replace Freedom Movement-affiliated leaders like Tom Levin. OEO reacted to pressure from white leaders in government who did not like to see funds flow into predominantly black programs. Meanwhile, the majority of CDGM preschool centers were successfully providing employment and positive learning and health activities for poor black people. These proved somewhat sustainable: after the first grant ended in August 1965, CDGM functioned for half a year with no OEO funds and it stayed strong.
