Letter, Annie Rankin, 12 August 1967

Annie Rankin, a grass roots Mississippi activist, maintained a lively correspondence with Northern friends. In this 1967 letter, she describes how a white man shot and killed a black man because the black man voted for black candidates in the Jefferson County election. Violence around voting continued in Mississippi long after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1965.
