Poll tax receipt, Madison County, Mississippi, 1965
In 1965, the Sheriff’s Deputy and County Tax Collector of Madison County, Mississippi issued this receipt for a two dollar poll tax to a white female of Canton, Mississippi. Poll taxes were intended to discourage African Americans from voting and records were kept of the race of individual voters.
