Flyer, Meredith Freedom March, 1966
This flyer encourages the youth of Jackson, Mississippi to organize the black community for the Meredith March. James Meredith, who had integrated the University of Mississippi, set off on a solitary march from Memphis to Jackson on June 4, 1966 to point up continued obstacles for African Americans who wished to vote. When Meredith was shot and wounded on the second day, his journey was transformed into what one historian has called "the last great march of the civil rights years." Notice that this flyer describes the march as covering both voter registration and black power and thus shows how the Meridith March uneasily served both the earlier and later goals of the Freedom Movement.
