Newspaper, The Black Encounter, Tougaloo College, 1972

The Encounter was a student newspaper founded by the Black Unity Coordinating Committee (BUCC) at Tougaloo College in 1970 after students were arrested and beaten for protesting the racist conditions in Mendenhall, Mississippi. The BUCC aimed to raise awareness of political affairs within the Tougaloo community and to protest American government efforts to keep Blacks from achieving freedom, equality, and justice. This effort shows that the Black Power movement appealed to college students and that Tougaloo College students remained connected to national political efforts and groups such as the Republic of New Africa in the 1970s.
