List of State Sovereignty Commission members, 1960-64, Mississippi State Legislature, 1964
The following document listed the members of the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission from 1960-1964. This commission, created by the Mississippi legislature in 1956, used state funds to promote states’ rights and prevent federal intervention, particularly as it related to Mississippi’s racially biased laws. The Sovereignty Commission was also closely related to, and funded, the private Citizens’ Council. Many members on the Commission were state officials or members of the state legislature. Governor Ross Barnett, a staunch defender of segregation and white superiority, headed the commission and was governor when James Meredith attempted to integrate the University of Mississippi in 1962. This document demonstrated how state lawmakers used the law to co-opt constitutionally approved intervention by the federal government.
