House Bill 880, Mississippi State Legislature, 1956
The following bill, introduced in the Mississippi State Legislature in 1956, created the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission. House Bill No. 880 outlined the commission’s infrastructure and policies and specifically allowed state officials to serve on the commission which is charged to protect the state's rights against federal encroachment. This bill, and the commission it enacted, demonstrated the role state government played in protecting segregation and social inequality and inequity. Today, we find it appalling that taxpayer money was used for such a purpose.
