Advertisment, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, 1964

This advertisement from the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) solicited donations through “The Student Voice,” SNCC’s newsletter. The picture of an elderly black man with the words ‘I didn’t know colored people could vote’ emphasizes the fact that many African Americans never had the opportunity to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed voting rights. Voting rights became the issue on which much of the early efforts of the Mississippi Freedom Movement, including SNCC, focused.
