Tiffany Joseph (Brown '04)
A sociology and Africana Studies major, Tiffany was inspired in part by her work on this project to write a senior thesis entitled "Black Women in the Civil Rights Movement: 1960-1970." Tiffany has gone on to earn a PhD in sociology from the University of Michigan.

About her thesis, Tiffany writes: "While completing research at the Tougaloo Archives in the summer of 2002, some of the documents I found suggested the presence of social conflict within the Civil Rights Movement. Interracial tempers flared as black and white activists disagreed over strategies and intraracial class conflict discouraged some lower class African Americans from participating in a movement seemingly dominated by middle and upper class blacks. Other documents, particularly those written by female activists, shed light on the gender dynamics within the movement, an issue that had not been deeply explored. These documents intrigued me the most, particularly because I am a black female who has benefited significantly from Civil Rights legislation. I began to wonder about the quality of life for black women in the 1960s, especially black female activists who became involved during a time in US history when women were expected to conform to strictly defined gender roles. My curiosity about gender and its intersection with race became my thesis topic. As I gathered additional research and spoke with my thesis advisor (Dr. Hilary Silver), my thesis reader (Dr. Joy James), and other professors, my thesis came to examine the experiences of black female activists and how sociological theory could explain the intricacies of social movement formation and gender roles within the Civil Rights Movement."

Ilana Friedman (Brown '04)
