head shot of Michael Gaughan

Michael Gaughan

Michael Gaughan grew up in rural Angola, NY, where as a teenager he discovered the underground press, and punk rock. He started an underground newspaper in his high school in Angola; the thrill of free speech through anonymous publishing inspired him to work for an undergraduate degree in Journalism and a Master's degree in Creative Writing and English. In the mid-90's, Mike came to Providence and worked at the parking lot of a Holiday Inn, where he parked tour buses for the music artists playing concerts in Providence. Unable to sell his interviews of these artists to The Providence Journal, The New Paper, or The Phoenix, Mike started the fanzine Whatever Magazine, the Zine for Good People with Bad Jobs in 1994. The 'zine progressed from lament over lack of opportunities for Generation X adults to a blog of Mike's concert experiences.
