This map presents the current administrative division of Romania into six regions and 41 counties (to which Bucharest, the capital, which has the status of a county, should be added). We translated by “county” the Romanian term județ, originaly from Muntenia and generally used nowadays. Other Romanian terms with the same meaning are: ținut (formerly used in Moldova and at times also given the meaning of “region”) and comitat, district or scaun (in Transilvania). To learn about some of the former administrative divisions of Romania, see Former Administrative Divisions of Romania.
The former provinces of Basarabia (now the Republic of Moldova) and Bucovina (now partially included in Romania and partially in Ukraine) are also shown since many of the charms in our corpus originate from these areas.
