5 - Pal. Acciaiuoli

Ancient houses of the Acciaiuoli with a roof-garden overlooking the Arno. Bought by the Usimbardi, secretaries of Ferdinando I, in 1603 who enlarged it and rebuilt the Arno façade. Repurchased by the Acciaiuoli in 1663. Destroyed by German mines 1944. G-L 1 The remaining fragment is at B. SS Apostoli 9.

"Quarter: S. Maria Novella, Parishes: SS Apostoli, S. Biagio, S. Cecilia, S. Maria degli Ughi, S. Stefano, S. Trinita, Streets: Borgo SS Apostoli, Lungarno, Por S. Maria, V delle Terme, V Porta Rossa {p}, V Vacchereccia. Square 59 had many households, many shops, many patricians, many households with servants, many households w/o surnames, and some households headed by widows. The fish market was initially at the northern end of the Ponte Vecchio (Pza del Pesce); it was moved to the Loggia del Pesce in the Mercato Vecchio (sq. 48) in 1565."
