The different colors of USOs in Providence

Below are two photographs that appeared in the Providence Journal during the first week of May, 1945. They show the crew of the navy cruiser Providence being entertained at two different Providence USO functions within a day of each other.
The caption of this photo explains that "while part of the men went to the Knight Street Canteen, about 200 others were at the Journal Canteen." From the picture it is apparent that most of the soldiers and women attending the Knight Street USO were black.

That evening the same crew was entertained again at the Journal Canteen, and it is apparent that this USO is mostly populated by white people.
