Danzig -- History -- Relations to Saxony

In 1697 the Polish nobility voted not to elect the French nominee, Louis, Prince de Conti as King of Poland. August I, Elector of Saxony, converted to Catholicism so that he might occupy that position, was subsequently elected and became August II, King of Poland. When the Elector converted it was stipulated that the rest of Saxony would remain Protestant.
