To appreciate Luise Gottsched's contribution to this enterprise it is important to begin with her exceptional youth in Danzig. Luise Kulmus (1713-1762) had just turned 22 years old when she married the professor from Leipzig. Twenty-two formative years had been spent with her family in Danzig. Both Danzig and her family were unusual, and their influence would have made her notable wherever she went.
