Title A name given to the resource Portrait of John Nicholas Brown I as a Lad (1871) Description An account of the resource This is a portrait of John Nicholas Brown I when he was a young boy. The original hung above the mantel when Sophia Augusta Brown, John Nicholas’ mother, lived in the house. John Nicholas Brown’s wife, Natalie Bayard Dresser, owned it after her husband’s death and she kept it in her home in Newport. Their son, John Nicholas Brown II, returned it to its original place above the dining room fireplace when he moved into the house. The painting that currently hangs in the dining room is a replica. The replica was commissioned in 2006 when the original returned to the private collection of the Brown family. Title A name given to the resource Painting of Mr. Nightingale’s House at Providence, Rhode Island (Approx. 1802) Description An account of the resource Miss Alice Banniter painted this watercolor while she was a student of Archibald Robertson at his Colombian Academy of Painting around 1802. The artist probably based her landscape on a sketch done by another artist in Providence or painted from memory, as Robertson’s school was in New York. The painting is a representation of the house prior to the building of the additions and outbuildings that were present when the Browns made it their home. Title A name given to the resource Portrait of the Brown Children (1845) Description An account of the resource These three children sitting in a wagon are AnnMary (left) John Carter II (center), and Caroline “Carrie” (right) Brown. These children lived much of their lives in the 19th century, though the boy shares a name with his cousin who lived during the 20th century. These siblings were the three middle children of Nicholas Brown III, the brother of John Carter Brown. These straight-back chairs offered little in the way of comfort or padding. They communicate much about the kinds of refined, ritualized behaviors expected in the formal setting of the Victorian-era parlor. With the invention of spring-seated furniture in the 1830s and the decline in popularity of formal parlors, rooms like this that once acted as public spaces for formal visiting would have become more comfortable, family-oriented places. The Brown’s “den” or “study” became a space for John and Anne to have a moment of peace together after dinner. The two would have cozied up in front of the fire in the two armchairs—John in the red velvet upholstered lounge and Anne in the pink-and-white seat—with a book and a cocktail, the room filled with smoke from Anne’s cigarettes.
